SANGEETHA MALLYA, a sales engineer from Dubai, UAE with her teammate, Deepak Soni defeated all other teams from across the world to emerge as the winner of international mega finals held in Goa. She has previously won several school as well as radio singing competitions.

DAMODAR PRABHU of Pittsburgh, PA was invited by several Church groups and Jewish Cultural Center in PA to give a talk on "Essence of Sanatana Dharma" in September 1999.

Dr. NARASINHA R. KAMATH of Flushing, NY appeared on ITV LIVE INTERVIEW SHOW on Oct 11th 1999 (Indian Television Channel 77 in New York). He was interviewed on Indian Classical Music and Instruments such as Harmonium, Flute and Mouth Organ. He also gave a LIVE DEMO on Television by playing short pieces on these 3 Musical Instruments. He also gave explanation of various Classical Ragas. There was also a Live Question and Answer Session with Audience on Telephone and TV which lasted for 40 minutes. This LIVE TV SHOW was well appreciated by TV Audience of tristate area.

The Konkani Association of Ontario, Canada celebrated their annual Diwali party on Saturday November 6, 1999 at Port Credit secondary School, Mississauga, Ont. There was Rangoli competition followed by snacks and entertainment. American Midwest Konkani Association (AMKA) celebrated the Diwali at the Balaji Temple in Aurora, Illinois on the evening of November 6, 1999.

The evening began with Aarti (Jaya Jagadisha Hare). This was followed by a program of music and dance by the children of AMKA members. The participants included Nisha Chittal (Bharata Natyam), Namita Kamath (Violin), Seema Kamath (Poem), Ashwin Kini (Song), Rupika Menon (Dance), Manish Nayak (Talk), Rajiv and Vinny Nayak (Violin), Meeta Rao (Bharata Natyam), Kunal Savkur (Trumpet), Kushal Savkur (Talk), and Devyani and Namrata Sirur (Song and Dance).

All enjoyed a delicious and sumptuous authentic konkani style dinner cooked by the ladies of AMKA..

The Houston area Konkanis celebrated their annual Diwali Party on Saturday November 13th 1999 at Viceroy Party Hall in Houston. The function was sponsored by Vasudev & Shobha Shenoy of Houston, TX and was well attended.

The Konkani Association of Michigan held its Diwali function on November 13, 1999 in Rochester Hills, Michigan. About 105 people attended. The program started with the invocation by Anil Shanbhag. Pandurang Bhakta explained the significance of Diwali. This was followed by an appeal for members to volunteer to become bone marrow donors on behalf of Mithun Kamath. Hopefully, a match will be found soon. We also held, for the first time, a holiday food drive for the needy in the Detroit area, which was donated to a local food bank. We hope this will become an annual event. The entertainment program followed and included: Deepak Bhandarkar on violin; a Hindi song by Geetanjali Suratkal; piano by Varun Bhandarkar and Sheila and Anita Mallya; a song on the harmonica by Umesh Kulkarni; a Konkani song by Satish Kamath; Anita Mallya on flute; Mikey Oommen on guitar; Suchitra Bhakta on piano; and Hindustani classical songs by Shamal and Srirammohan Beltangady. We also had a skit performed by members and a fancy dress show with the children. The program ended with a children's sing along of Christmas songs and "It's a Small, Small World" with the whole audience participating.

The program was followed by a sumptuous Konkani dinner prepared by the members and included vegetable pulau, chicken curry, mixed pickle, channa chole, tomato salad, boondhi raita, thendle bibbo upkari, samosas and pita bread. For dessert, we had jilebi, laddu, peda and pineapple ambrosia. The evening ended with a vote of thanks by the outgoing president Vasudev Mallya and the outgoing secretary Pandurang Bhakta. Finally, the new office bearers for year 2000 who were elected earlier in the evening were introduced. They were:

The Konkani Association of Southern California (KASC) celebrated their annual Diwali party on Sunday November 14, 1999 at the City of Arcadia Community Center in Arcadia, CA.

The Konkani Association of Ontario, Canada arranged a Satya Narayana Pooja on Sunday November 21, 1999 at Sanathan Mandir at Woodbine & 16th Avenue in Unionvoille, Ont.

Konkani gathering in Florida: A few Konkanis gathered at Dr. Mukund Kini's house in Ft. Myers on 11/27/99 and discussed many Konkani happenings over delicious Konkani food topped off with our own "dalithoi" and "kultha kadi". Konkanis from as far as Miami & Tampa were present and discussed forming an association of Konkanis of Florida and meeting at different locations at regular intervals. Mr. & Mrs. Srinivas and Gauri Kini have eagerly agreed to host the next meeting at their house on Saturday Jan 15, 2000. Obituary:
Mrs. PREMALATA KALLIANPUR (69), passed away after a brief illness, in Mumbai, India, on May 11, 1999. Khabbar sends heartfelt condolences to her son, Chaitanya Kallianpur and family of Randolph, NJ.

Sri NARSING CHANDAVARKAR passed away on September 10, 1999. Khabbar sends heartfelt condolences to his son, Jaidev Chandavarkar & family of West Lake Village, CA.

Shri SHANKAR PRABHU, 62, passed away on Monday, October 4, 1999, at the Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. He came to the US for a liver transplant but died because of several complications due to a failing liver. His body was flown back to Mangalore, where his last rites were performed as per his wish. Khabbar sends heartfelt condolences to his niece, Neela Kamath and family of Houston, TX.

Mr. B. H. GOPALKRISHNA PAI (64) of Altamonte Springs, FL died of stroke on Saturday October 9, 1999. Obituary-Martyrdom of one of Our Brave Soldiers in J&K (Appeared in konkani-net in Oct., '99) It is with deep regret and a great feeling of profoundness that I record the death of a Brave great soldier at Jammu and Kashmir. Lt. Col. Ajit Bhandarkar of Rashtriaya Rifles. (Madras Regiment), A GSB who hailed from Bangalore , was killed in an encounter at Surankot near Poonch in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday. His Body was brought home to Bangalore on Late Sunday Night.
On receiving Clues about some militants in a forest in Surankot in the Doda sector of Jammu, Lt. Col. Bhandarkar rushed to the area with his team at around 3.30 PM(IST) on Saturday Afternoon. In the ensuing Gun Battle, Lt. Col. Bhandarkar killed five militants before falling to the enemy bullets.
Three Jawans were also killed in the encounter along with him. Thirty Nine year old Bhandarkar is survived by his Parents , Two Brothers , Wife Namrata and Two Sons, Nirbhay(7) and Akshay (5).. One of his brothers Lt. Col. Arun Bhandarkar ,is also in the Army, and is currently serving in Jhansi. His Father Mr. U.V.Bhandarkar , is a Former Div. Manager of New India Assurance.
