Research Project examining the perception of Indian immigrant males
APPEAL -

Hello, I am a graduate student who is currently working on a research project examining the perception Indian immigrant males in the U.S. (who are over the age of 18) have regarding violence in interpersonal relationships. The goal of the research is to gain a better understanding of interpersonal violence in our community which will aid in creating prevention and support programs specifically for individuals in our community. My research consists of a 30-minute survey which participants anonymously fill out. I was wondering if there would be anyway for me to post the link to my survey in your paper.

Thank you for considering my request.

APNA Event raises funds for new IT campus at College in Mangalore

(As appeared as an article from The Indian Express , North American Edition Aug 1st 2008)

The Aloysians and Partners in North America (APNA), an organization comprising the alumni and friends of St. Aloysius College (SAC) in Mangalore and Aloysian Partners International (API), organized an event at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in Manhattan last week to gain support for their new campus. The SAC will build this campus for management and information technology, estimated to cost a whopping $15 million and will be spread over an area of 17 acres in Beeri Ullal, 10 km from Mangalore. Speaking at the event, Fr Denzil Lobo, vice principal of the 128-year-old college and the chief architect of the project, said, “It’s our mission to make our business school one of the top 10 in India. The 1st phase of the construction is expected to be completed by June 2009 after which we are going to move in.”

API, the umbrella organization for Aloysian Partners, which was officially launched at the meet, has undertaken the gargantuan task of raising funds within a period of three years for the project. “We have planned to create similar Aloysians and Partners bodies in India, Middle East, Europe, Oceania and Africa. We are yet to decide on the people who would spearhead the job of creating databases in their respective zones, which is our primary objective,” said Victor Pais, president of Sigma and a VP of APNA.

Leading by example, Pais contributed $250,000 for the project, but the biggest contribution came from Prem Watsa, CEO and chairman of Fairfax Financial Holdings in Toronto, Canada, who pledged $1m despite being a non-Aloysian.

Srimad Anantheshwar Temple (SAT) Schools

Brief History and Appeal for Donation for School Development
S.A.T school was founded by the Management of Srimad Anantheshwar Temple" with the sole purpose of imparting 'education with values' in non urban areas like Manjeshwar. The school was founded in 1925 when there were no facilities for education for an area around 20 Kilometers. Hence, students from far away places such as Kumbla, Kodlamogaru, Miyapadavu Moodambail and Ullal benefited from our Institution. Noon meal was also provided by the Temple Management for those students. Over the years, 1000's of students have studied in this institution and at present are very well off, in better positions allover India and abroad.

With the changing times, everything changes and medium of instruction is not an exception. We see that, today, majority want to send their wards to such schools where the medium of instruction is in English. Hence, the school management has decided to begin sections where the medium of instruction is English, where L.K.G and U.K.G sections were commenced this year as the first step. In the coming years, this will be extended till the Tenth Standard.

The Govt. of Kerala had issued an order to all the Managements of the schools to renovate the old Buildings in accordance with the specifications mentioned in K.E.R and hence, many classrooms needs to be substituted. The Govt. provides Mid-day meals to the students for which a Dining Hall is necessary. In the near future, the management has decided to construct sufficient classrooms and a Dining Hall. This project requires a sum of approximately Rs. 18 lakhs, where the old students of this school as well as Philanthropists and the general public are requested to donate generously for the noble cause of imparting quality education to the needy people of this area.

VISHWA KONKANI KENDRA
(WORLD KONKANI CENTRE)
===================================================================================================================
You may remember that to facilitate the preservation and development of Konkani language and culture, a mammoth effort was made in 1995 - First World Konkani Convention 1995 - held for the first time at Mangalore with the united effort of all Konkani bodies. The first World Konkani Convention attracted more than 5000 delegates apart from thousands of visitors and the seven-day event was a great success.

Subsequently, in the year 1996, the Konkani Bhas Ani Sanskriti Pratisthan (Konkani Language and Cultural Foundation), a registered non profit cultural organisation, was established. The main goal of the Pratisthan is to actualise the mandate given at the World Konkani Convention 1995 establishment of Vishwa Konkani Kendra which will manifest itself at Konkani Gaon - 'The Konkani Village' located in 3 acres in the Shaktinagar, Mangalore with estimated cost of Rs. 6.00 crores. The various projects are given below:

1. VISHWA KONKANI LIBRARY: A World class Library will be set up for housing a comprehensive collection of published Konkani literature in Roman, Devnagari, Kannada and Malayalam scripts, apart from adding the new books published annually. Ancient palm leaf scripts too will be preserved at the library.

2. KONKANI HERITAGE MUSEUM: This will feature a wide collection of exhibits and artefacts pertaining to Konkani culture and heritage collected from various sources for the purpose of preservation of Konkani identity (Asmithai)

3. HERITAGE HOMES: An entire block of heritage homes will be constructed in the traditional fashion, incorporating all modern facilities to serve as accommodation for guests and visiting dignitaries.

4. PROMOTION OF KAVI KALA : Special effort will be made to promote Kavi Kala, the fine art of mural painting, earlier common at Konkani temples, but which is now on the wane due to want of patronage.

5. CONFERENCE HALL: A well-equipped conference hall will be constructed with a seating capacity of 700 for the purpose of hosting seminars, workshops and intellectual interaction. In addition there will also be smaller lecture halls to serve various training programmes.

6. HOSTELS: A well furnished hostels will be built to provide accommodation to the students and faculties of the residential training programmes conducted at the Kendra.

7. OPEN AIR THEATRE: This will facilitate the staging of plays, concerts and performing arts.

8. KONKANI BHASHA SAMSTHAN (Konkani Research Centre) Propagating Konkani with a Global Perspective : With the advent of the internet, the opportunity is now wide open to unite the Konkani people as one family cutting across barriers like time and space. This task will be spearheaded through the Konkani Bhasha Samsthan (The Konkani Research Centre), which will facilitate research and academic pursuits in Konkani with residential facilities.

9. WORLD KONKANI WEBSITE and Online News Magazine: A World Konkani website will be set up and maintained for the worldwide dissemination of information and knowledge pertaining to Konkani.

10. ONLINE KONKANI TRAINING: An online programme in Konkani, developed in collaboration with the Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore, will be offered for the purpose of teaching Konkani. This will be especially useful to the 2nd generation American Konkanis and also the children of Non Resident Indian Konkanis residing in other parts of the World.

Dear Vasanth,
I would like to bring the following to the attention of fellow Konkanis. The Canara Engineering College is the only Konkani Linguistic Minority Institution of higher education in Karnataka and probably in the whole of India. 35% of the seats are reserved for Konkanis in this Institute.

I was fortunate to visit this wonderful institute and meet the principal Dr.Premkumar, and the secretary of Canara High School Association, Mr. Annappa Pai in December 07. The institute is situated in a picturesque area, has many amenities and a well equipped computer lab. Konkani was the language heard in the corridors and the classrooms. According to the principal, the graduating students consistently receive good job placements. This Institute came into being due to the dedication, hard work and financial assistance of many Konkanis, as well as significant loans from banks in the Mangalore area.

Both the principal and secretary expressed their desire to make other Konkanis aware of this unique institute that we should all be proud of. They are especially interested in connecting with Canara Primary and High School alumni, as there is an established alumni association in Mangalore that is active and growing.

VISHWA KONKANI LIBRARY

J.B MOREAS MUMBAI

(Member Vishwa Konkani Sahitya Akademi)

One of the several wings of Vishwa Konkani Kendra is the Vishwa Konkani Library. This will be a treasury for Konkani books in all scripts. At present they are scattered from Maharashtra in the North to Kerala in the South. The books written in the last two centuries and earlier or manuscripts preserved on palm leaves will be added to the library in the near future. The process has already begun.

It is no secret that almost all our books see only the first edition. If an ardent book lover wants to read a particular book published, say, 10 years earlier, he will find it hard to locate the book anywhere. If he is lucky, he might find it with some book lover friend. In the circumstances, researchers, students, historians and Konkani lovers will find it difficult to pursue their interests.

Keeping all this in mind, the Vishwa Konkani Library has decided to approach book lovers to donate books in any script, to the Library. As I said earlier, nearly all of our books see only one edition. Therefore, the only way to collect old books is to fall back on private collections. Fortunately there are many book lovers, particularly in Goa and Mangalore who have built up their personal collections of books over a period of time. As I explained above, several of these worthies, will gladly and willingly part with their precious books if they are taken good care and made good use of them, particularly as many of them will be in their beloved collection after their demise. The Vishwa Konkani Library, I am sure, will sort out and preserve these books which will be of perpetual help to those who seek them.

Therefore owners of such personal collections, who want to donate their books to the Vishwa Konkani Library, will benefit if they approach the Vishwa Konkani Kendra to do the needful at their earliest. The Kendra will take necessary action to categorise and preserve the books and protect them from natural causes.

The Vishwa Konkani Kendra seeks donation of books from personal book collectors. Their names will be written on the books and a donors’ list would be displayed in the Library.

The Vishwa Konkani Kendra and the Vishwa Konkani Sahitya Akademi is on the job of preparing exhaustive Bibliography of Konkani books in all the major scripts published in the last two centuries.

The Vishwa Konkani Kendra also seeks donation of literary works on palm leaves which are scattered all over the Konkani area. We also appeal to book lovers to help us in compiling the list of books publisherwise. We will also use the earlier Bibliographies published in Karnataka and Goa. In other words, all help to start Vishwa Konkani Library is most welcome.

Do you care about having a say in what you buy? What our government does in your name? What your children are shown on television, hear on the radio, and can do on the Internet?

I have never sent a chain letter before. But as someone who cares passionately about journalism, I am sending you this email in hopes that you will pass it on to your friends and family members and become more aware of the political peril we all face if our press withers any further under the onslaught of relentless corporate raiders and ideologues.

An informed voting citizenry is at the heart of a vital democracy, and we are tilting toward the complete loss of the seed corn that provides most of us (including talk radio, Google News and Jon Stewart) with critical information - a robust, independent press.

While imperfect as all human endeavors are, the press was considered so fundamental to democracy that it was the only private enterprise given special Constitutional protection under the First Amendment.

Please follow the links below to the first installment of The Seattle Times' series on "The Democracy Papers." Talk about it with those you care about. Call or write your elected Congressional representative and demand media reform now. Please don't be silent on this: It's too important to the future of our open, free society.

Yours truly,

This is an appeal by the disciples of Vidwan Udupi Vasudev Bhat to donate generously for the cause of classical music.

Our Guru Sri Vasudev Bhat was born at Udupi in 1938 & began to learn Karnatak Music from the age of three from his maternal grandfather Piteelu Manjunathayya Udupi who was the disciple of Asthana Vidvan Sri Mysore Bidaram Krishnappa. The guru gave his first concert at the age of 12 and has never looked back.

After his formal studies, he worked as a journalist for some time but the call of music was irresistible, so decided to spend full time on music. He is a well versed master of not only vocal music, but is also a master of musical instruments like Veena, violine, harmonium, Tabla etc and teaches to people from all walks of life. He has produced about 100 audiocassettes, out of which Kristha Geethanjali has won appreciation from Pope John Paul II. With local artists he also produced a movie, Bhuvana Jyothi on the life of Jesus the Christ, which earned him name and fame but proved to be a fiasco in the money game of box office!

Around 1982, he founded Nadavibhavom – a musical educational research institute in Udupi. Nadavibhavom means luxuriance of sounds - the sound of different musical instruments along with the voice of humans in the form of singing. All these years he has conducted research on pacifying capacity of music on human mind and body by singing accompanied by different musical instruments in different ragas.

In this silver jubilee year he intends to bring out CDs on the curative therapy of music to soothe human mind and body. There are also plans to conduct seminars & discussions about different aspects of music and to honour a few musicians who have contributed a lot to the field of music.

His address: Udupi Vasudev Bhat, Nadaviabhavom, 7-1-90, Bailakare, Udupi, KA 576 101, India; Tel: +91 820 252 4345/ 4190

Thank you for your time & for the efforts to make the guru’s dream come true. May god bless you.

The KTKS is stepping into 25th year of its formation through the sincere and dogged determination of its members and artists who undertake extensive travel throughout the country wherever they are called upon to stage Konkani performance.

The KTKS has staged many social dramas written by noted Konkani dramatists like Shri A.G.Kamath, Shri K.G.Kamath, Dr. C.N.Shenoy and Late Shri Devaraya Byndoor. Their most popular dramas are Sarve Janaha Kanchanam ashrayante, Gruhini Gruham Uchyate and Nandadeep.

In the first ever Vishwa Konkani Sammelan at Mangalore in 1995 KTKS was honoured by a special award "VISHWA KONKANI KALA RATNA" for the outstanding contribution in the promotion of Konkani language through theatre. During the first Vishwa Saraswat Sammelan in Mangalore in 1999, KTKS was honored by the august hands of Guruvaryas of all four Maths.

During the last 24 years we have presented 35 plays in over 200 shows allover India. We have also presented classical music programmes, social awareness lectures by eminent personalities and social workers. The KTKS wishes to serve for years to come!

G. S. B. Scholarship League,
Dwarakhnath Bhavan, Katrak Road, Wadala, Mumbai 400 031, India

SUB : CENTENARY ENDOWMENT

The Centenary Endowment is to commemorate the founders of the “ League” and the Institution. Since inception in 1912, the GSB Scholarship League has assisted tens of thousands GSB children in their education to progress in life. Many among them have excelled in the profession as Chartered Accountants, Engineers, Architects, Academicians, Administrators, Doctors, Advocates, Entrepreneurs, Scientists, Journalists, Bankers and in other careers. The “League” takes pleasure in their success. Many of them contribute regularly to the corpus of the “ League ” by way of Endowments.

The “League” reaches the Centenary in year 2012. It is a unique occasion. The best way to celebrate this is to rededicate ourselves to the noble vision of the founders by way of raising our annual disbursements from the present Rs 1.4 million to over Rs 4 million in free scholarship by the Centenary year. We just need to triple the corpus from the present Rs.17 million to a modest level of Rs 50 million. This is not an over ambitious target. We rely on you and other generous GSBs to reach this goal.

The enclosed “Profile” and the summary of the accounts for the year 2004-2005, briefly tells about the functioning of the GSB Scholarship League.

The “ League” accepts every contribution with gratitude. We value your participation in this effort on an on going basis. Please reach to us the filled in Endowment Form along with your cheque / D.D. payable to “GSB Scholarship League“ at Mumbai. Your Endowment will give opportunity to children to achieve their potential and dreams. We remain ever grateful to you.
