Konkani Sammelan Update
Konkani Sammelan – 2010 Update from Chicago
Due to the downturn in the economy, the Chicago Konkanis looked at alternatives to having a costly conventional Sammelan next year and were working on a cruise idea instead. However, after several quotes were obtained for cruises from Florida, it seemed like a better idea to have the cruise organized by a Konkani group in a port city. Fortunately such a group was found! Under the tried and tested leadership (Sammelan 2004) of Dr. Ramadas Kamath, the Southern California Konkanis have, very enthusiastically, offered to organize this first-ever Konkani Cruise. The Chicago Konkanis will still host the next Sammelan but instead of July 2010 it will be in July 2012. With so much time to plan, we assure you, it will be one Sammelan worth waiting for!
Save the Dates – Konkani Cruise – 2010 - July 5 to 9, 2010
In lieu of the 2010 Sammelan (which will be postponed to 2012 in Chicago), the Southern California Konkani Cruise Committee is arranging an exciting four-day cruise from Los Angeles, California to Ensenada, Mexico (with a stop at Catalina Island) on July 5-9, 2010.
Plan to relax with your fellow Konkanis on this unique four-day excursion! An ideal opportunity for first-time cruisers to "test the waters" with friends and family and for experienced cruisers to experience Konkani group travel! The itinerary provides for plenty of time to visit various attractions in Southern California either prior to boarding or after the ship returns to Long Beach (Disneyland, Universal Studios, Hollywood, etc.)
Arrangements also are being made to have Indian food available in the dining room for all cruise participants if desired. On board ship activities typically include a Casino, Bingo, Art Show and Auction, Pool, Fitness Center, Ping Pong, Comedy Shows, Music and Variety Shows, Youth Activities (Carnival's Kids Club), Shopping, Spa Treatments, 24/7 Food, and Shore Excursions (to Catalina Island and Ensenada, Mexico), etc. We are also trying to arrange some CME credit programs for medical professionals who attend the cruise.
Negotiations are underway with Carnival cruise line, and the current estimated cost is around $325 per person for an inside stateroom, $375 for an ocean view stateroom. Third and fourth persons in a stateroom are approximately $200 each. The price includes all meals (including Indian food).
In order to negotiate an even better deal from Carnival, we would like to have a sense of how many people might be interested in joining us. Please complete the survey on our website by July 31, 2009, so that we have a sense of how many staterooms to reserve.
